GBAx.com review of the obscure Gameking Handheld 20/08/04

Manufacturer: Timetop

This is one rare handheld! When we came across it we were sure they would be a clone console, maybe of the original GB, but suprisingly it isn't - its a genuine mega rare handheld.

The first thing that hits you is the super low res grey scale screen - were talking 1990's mobile phone resolution! But mysteriously the sound quality is very high, certainly an odd combination.

The system has 3 built in games, a 1942 clone, a platform game and a bomberman clone. They are all pretty good even in the lowres, seeing just how well they converted 1942 into pixelated tinyness is fun in itself.

The unit is pretty solid, its very light, and the game carts are about the size of the old GB ones. All the games are of decent quality, we expected utter rubbish yet it seems the developers actually tried hard to make good games on the limited screen. There is a version of Aleste, a metal slug style game, Lode runner and a whole series of arcade and console clones.

Is it worth £9.99? Hell yes if your a collector or just like checking out odd consoles, if you prefer modern all colour GBA action keep clear of this, its very very diffrent, it reminded us of the Chip8 system. Interestinly there is no emulator for the Gameking, even if it would run in a postage stamp sized window we would still like to see it!

All in all its an interesting discovery, we assume it was made at a low cost so people in asia could afford to buy it, it seems there was only ever 13 games released and we have copies of them all, so you can complete your collection in one go :)

You can buy it here.
