GBAx.com review of the Game Theory Admiral (GTA, Portable NES) 2/09/04

Manufacturer: GTA

Back in the early 1990's a very large poor quality portable NES compatible console was released called the 'Game Axe', it had an STN screen and poor battery life, it just didn't really work. The GTA is probably what they wanted to make but the technology just didn't exist at the time.

Well now it is possible to make such a system to a high quality and a low cost, and thats just what we have here with the GTA - a backlit TFT screen with contrast control, volume control, TV out, PSU input, built in joypad and ports for 2 more - all you could ask for - use it as a portable or as a home console connected to the TV.

The TFT screen is great, nice size and the contrast control allows you to adjust it to suit for all games - and being backlit means playing anywhere is possible night or day. The Console itself takes 3 AA batteries, this is most likely so the battery life is good and the screen is bright and clear - a good idea in my opinion, all during the testing the batteries have lasted fine so the life is at least 5+ hours (we will have to get back to you on a final figure!)

Out the box the system is compatible with Jap/Asia NES carts, the cart is mounted via an adaptor in a strange way, the cart comes over the top of the console like a sun guard (this is probably the reason), I think it might have been neater if it mounted on the back of the system, but its not much of a big deal once you get playing. I assume there will be an adaptor for USA style carts released soon, if you don't want to wait it is possible to use some standard Jap->USA NES adaptors with it.

The controls are excellent and feel very solid and responsive, there is also a reset button on the console so you don't have to keep turning it on and off, we tried it with a 6in1 multirom cart from China and it played it fine, nice loud speaker and perfect compatibility.

But if you have a GP32/GBA/Z and a nes emu why buy this? Well after playing on it all afternoon I can tell you nothing emulation wise exactly compares to the real thing, there is just *something* diffrent about playing the real thing on a small screen with the original cart plugged in, maybe its the music or the perfect compatability or just the feel of it, retro fans will understand :)

The GTA comes with an instruction manual (in the absolute worst english we have ever seen - very funny indeed), the TV cables so you can use it on a big screen, the Cart adaptor for JAP/ASIA carts and while stocks last a 6in1 game cart with some HK games on it.

You can buy it here.
